Currently Reading

A peek at my reading habits.

I saw this tag on whatthelog and decided to give it a try! It was short and easy to answer.

1) How many books do you usually read at once?

This is going to really bother some people…  At least five.  I always have three nonfiction (or short story) books going – one for work, one for the car, one for bedtime reading.  I actively participate in 2 nonfiction book groups every month and occasionally participate in two others.  Usually there is at least one book that’s required reading for professional development at one of my jobs.  I try to average at least one novel a week.

I consider a book to be “currently reading” if I’ve read something from it in the last three days OR the last time I had access to it.  (For example, the book I leave at my workplace for lunch reading once a week).

2) If you’re reading more than one book at a time, how do you decide when to switch books?

I have specific books I read at specific times based on chapter length, difficulty, and my own interest.  In free time I read more according to my mood.  Fiction I have to be careful with because if there is something I need to do, I will drop everything to get to the end of a good novel.

3) Do you ever switch bookmarks while you’re partway through a book?

Yes.  I occasionally pair a special bookmark with a particular book, but most of the time I use sticky notes.  Since I read a good number of library books, marking the pages with possible quotations or problems makes it easier to review the book and get it back to the library in a timely manner.

4) Where do you keep the book(s) you’re currently reading?

Everywhere.  One at each workplace where I eat meals.  One in my purse.  Two in my car (one for me and one for reading to the children).  Any bedtime read alouds have a special shelf.  The bookshelves in nearly every room have a space for Currently Reading/Want to Read.  Even the bathroom has a few books (although only ones we own and haven’t borrowed).

5) What time of day do you spend the most time reading?

It used to be before bed.  However with kids it is probably my lunch break.  Or depending on my schedule, any time that they are in school and I am not.

6) How long do you typically read in one sitting?

Ideally an hour or two.  I’ve been known to read for 16+ hours straight, however I have too many responsibilities to do that now.  Occasionally we will get away without the kids and then I can read all day.

7) Do you read hardbacks with the dust jacket on or off?

Depends on the book.

8) What position do you mainly use to read?

My legs fall asleep easily, so I try to move around.  I do have a bad habit of hunching over a book when there’s an exciting part.

9) Do you take the book you’re currently reading with you everywhere you go?

My purse book goes with me everywhere, but it’s usually a slow one or reread.

10) How often do you update your goodreads progress on the book you’re currently reading?

I can barely get it together enough to blog, if I actually updated my goodreads that would seriously cut into my reading time.

If you like learning about other people’s reading habits, I tag you!

About the 12 books pictured above…

The first eight were some of my currently reading at the time I wrote this post.  Some I’m close to completing, while others will take longer.  The final four books are ones that have at various points landed in my purse or diaper bag for on-the-go reading.

  1. I also have several books “currently reading” at the same time and always at least one of them is in my purse. I’ve found myself being disappointed when appointments are actually on-time so I don’t get in a little extra reading in the waiting room 🙂
